Earlier this week we told you about Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson and his alcohol related arrests. Well, they have finally caught up with him!!! Benson showed up to practice Monday morning and was sent home by coach Lovie Smith. The Bears then notified Benson of his release, which ended a horrible start to his NFL career. The release comes 2 years before the end of his contract. This is what Benson had to say Monday, “I apologize for making the poor decision to drink and drive during the early morning of Saturday, June 7th. Given the incident last month, it was a particularly bad decision. I have no excuse for this lack of judgment. Though I strongly believe that I am not guilty of any crime.” Benson’s attorney says that he feels the Bears waived Benson a little too early. Benson’s stats didn’t help his case with the Bears either. Producing what we call 3rd string stats, he only managed to come up with 1,593 yards and 10 touchdowns in his three years with the Bears, one of which he was a starter. The former Texas Longhorns star has resembled a troubled teen since entering the NFL.

We bet that baseball career he passed up is looking real good right about now!! Benson was drafted by the LA Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2001 MLB draft. Although he never saw playing time with the Dodgers, he played in their Summer league at Vero Beach and with the Gulf Coast League Dodgers. In 25 at bats he had 5 hits, 1 run, 3 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 RBI’s. Benson left the Dodgers in 2003 to concentrate on his football career.
