BET Losing Sponsors Over Rap Music

The reason we all enjoy watching BET may be the very reason sponsors are pulling their ads. Industry Ears and CNN, Proctor and Gamble, Pepsi, and General Motors are yanking their ads from BET shows Rap City and 106 and Park. The companies say that the violence and profanity that children are subjected to on these shows is not something they want their company partnered with. They claim to have done a study and found that children are exposed to violence, and profanity every 38 seconds. We watch BET and to be honest we don’t see that much violence, or hear that much language. We aren’t professionals or anything, but this study could be a little over-rated. What about cartoons? We see more violence in cartoons then we do on BET.

Black Entertainment TelevisionDebra Lee, BET chairman and CEO, told CNN, “the network pays attention to the content it airs and edits videos.” Paul Porter of media watchdog said in an interview, ?It?s geared for kids but the content is for adults, and that?s what the study shows.? Porter also goes on to add in the interview ?the standard excuse is about parents, but there?s supposed to be corporate responsibility too.? We here at randomgossip.com kinda agree, but not really. The main responsibility belongs to parents. Children watch these things if they are allowed to. If children are seeing things on TV that are not for their viewing, it is because parents are not monitoring them.

We can understand that an company might not agree with what a network might air, but saying that a study shows children are subjected to violence and profanity every 38 seconds is crazy. We personally watch BET and don’t see violence every 38 seconds. We do give great advice though… if it bothers you, change the dang channel!!
